Extension of Service Life of Supporting Steel Structures by HiFIT Treatment

The durability and service life of supporting steel structures can increase significantly by High Frequency Impact Treatment (HiFIT) of the welds. This applies especially to new steel structures, but also to existing steel structures having completed a major number of load changes.

Kranbau Köthen GmbH as a member of the „REFRESH“ research project consortium has the fundamental knowledge and skills for the purposeful and professional application of the highfrequency hammering method well-known under the trademark HiFIT. This applies particularly, in addition to the craftmanship and the technological equipment, to the engineering competence urgently required right from the start.

The unity of many years of collaborative work on research, professional engineering and know-how is extremely important for the implementation of the method and the success of its application.

Normally it is hardly possible with the help of a follow-up treatment to make a bad weld seam a good one. Service life of a good weld seam, however, can be extended five to ten times by means of HiFIT. So it is possible to make steel structures lighter, and it becomes meaningful to use steel qualities of higher strength for fatigue-loaded components.
